prices on wine

Unlike our own Permanent TSB/ESRI which takes a full 30 days after the period end to issue its (quarterly) House Price Index, the UK seems to have better data collection and analysis systems for reporting on house prices. The Nationwide Building Society has today published its July report. That Nationwide Building Society report is one of the referenced sources of information set out in the NAMA Long Term Economic Value Regulation and is a source for the key market data information shown at the top of this page.

The latest report from the Nationwide shows that prices in the UK fell by 0.5% in the month of July, the first decline in prices in since December 2009. The Nationwide attributes the fall to an increase in supply (the abolition of HIPs in June – the UK’s rough equivalent of the BER and sellers being tempted back into the market by a strong recovery in prices which has been evident since the start of 2009) and a decrease in demand (tight credit conditions and swingeing cuts to the public service and uncertainty about the economic future). The average price of a property in the UK today is GBP 169,347 (EUR 203,165 at GBP 1 = EUR 1.1997).

As for NAMA...

Rawson started making wine several years ago in his San Francisco garage with a neighbor, Fred Dick. It was a hobby that grew into a business with plans to expand into new space in Oakland later this year.

Several alliance members share facilities with Rock Wall Wines in Alameda, where a huge aircraft hangar at the old naval air station provides room to work and grow their businesses.

Other alliance winemakers, like Jeff Cohn at JC Cellars, who started working at bigger wineries, like Rosenblum, have grown their businesses and now operate their own wineries. JC Cellars shares winery and tasting room space with Dashe Cellars at 55 4th Street in Oakland.

Award Winners

Some of these wines are “turn your head around” good and have been recognized for excellence at various competitions around the state.

One of the newest alliance members, Urban Legend in Oakland, won Best of Show at the California State Fair for their 2009 Clarksburg rosato di barbera ($16). I wrote about this dry, flavorful summer wine in an earlier blog about the new winery near Jack London Square (621 4th Street, Oakland). Only 65 cases were made.Read more ...

There’s nothing that brings together strangers like a table full of deep-fat fried, sugary, chocolate-coated, barbecued and batter-coated foods. Except maybe indigestion and a week of caloric regret.

That’s the idea behind the second annual Fair Food Scramble, in which seven participants were given $20 each to scramble for their favorite eats from the Sonoma County Fair.

The still-sizzling windfall was collected at a communal picnic table and everyone shared in the bounty, ultimately naming this year’s Fair Food Winners. That’s $140 worth of food if you’re keeping track. Calorie-counting is an automatic disqualification. Using your fingers, accidental double-dipping and sharing bites comes with the territory.

This year’s Scramblers were selected from dozens of entries submitted to BiteClub. On the roster: BBQ-lover Scott Minaker, an engineer from Fulton (“I see food, I eat it.”); senior food adviser, Ron Reynolds (and wife Merrillee) of Rohnert Park who claims he’s been coming to the Sonoma County Fair since before he was born; adventurous eater Mar...

I have been playing a wine game with restaurant sommeliers and wine nerds across town where I show up with a mystery bottle and ask them to review it blind.  By not knowing what the wine is or who represents it, hopefully, an honest-no-bs-review is achieved. ~ PK

pearls before swine comic strip

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a new character in the Pearls Before Swine comic strip: a very dim, incompetent elephant policeman named Officer Potus.

Officer Potus is on a quest to create peace between Zebra and the crocodiles who’ve been trying for years to kill and eat Zebra. Though he acts as if he’s impartial, the officer’s “solutions” usually end up asking Zebra to let the crocodiles eat PART of him, or to let the crocs eat one of Zebra’s relatives.

Now, it sure looks/sounds to me as if SOME kind of political metaphor is being attempted, though I’m not at all sure what it is… and I’m not sure if Stephan Pastis has it fully figured out, either.

“POTUS” is an acronym used for the President of the United States. Is Officer Potus supposed to represent Obama, then? But he’s an elephant, which is usually supposed to represent the Republicans.

Let’s see… Zebra is surrounded by stupid enemies who have been trying to kill him for years, and yet HE'S the one being pressured by others to compromise with the fo...

En Papillote literally means to cook "in parchment". It is a French term for something that the Italians call al Cartoccio. Cooking en papillote is a method in which you seal the food in a pouch and bake. The food essentially steams in the oven in its own juices. Even in Indonesia they use a similar cooking method, but the food is wrapped in banana or cassava leaves  not parchment paper. This cooking method is very easy and is a low fat method of cooking and the best part is that it is so easy to clean up. This method is perfect for cooking chicken, fish, vegetables and even fruits.Cooking en papillote has another added benefit and that is the element of surprise and excitement it brings to the table.Once the meal is cooked, each guest has his or her own , surprise packet to open at the table. I have yet to see a unhappy face as guests open their packets to watch the aromatic steam escapes.
I have used this  method before on a whole chicken and the result was extraordinary. This time however, I wanted to use whole chicken breasts and with chicken breasts there is always the fear of over cooking it, resulting in dry tasteles...

    wine totes and luggage

This September, San Francisco-based Mulholland will expand their waxed canvas offerings to include green. With handsome contrast to the dark brown leather trim, the bags – like the Negotiator shown here – continue a progression of a luggage line that also includes dop kits, duffles, soft-side brief cases, and wine carriers. The Negotiator puts contemporary functionality in a traditional form. Your laptop will be padded, and your other technological bits and bobs well situated.

Don’t want to wait until September? Mulholland offers the bag in tan right now.

Secondary view of the Negotiator after the jump.

Wine Tasting March 2010, Old World versus New World wines.

Finest Prosecco de Valdobbiadene, non vintage -Veneto, Italy - alochol 11.5%

Prosecco is probable the best known of the Italian sparkling wines and is increasingly popular in the UK. It is made by the Charmat or closed tank method. This usually results in a softer, fruitier wine than Champagne and other wines produced by the Champagne method. The tasting wine is made from the Prosecco grape in the Veneto area of Italy. It is produced for one of the leading supermarkets in the UK by one of the best Prosecco producers, Bisol. Bisol owns its own vineyards and production facilities. This is a creamy, smooth sparkler with notes of peach and pear. Good as a light aperitif and with smoked salmon.
